In 1883, the members of Zion United Church of Christ (then Zions Evangelische Kirche) wanted to establish a burial ground for their loved ones away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In what was then countryside, they found 49 acres of gently sloping land that featured an abundance of shade trees. Here, they knew their family members could rest in peace. Though neighborhoods and roads have grown up around the cemetery in the intervening century, the serene nature of the land remains.
